Are girls smarter than boys?

"Are girls smarter than boys?" is the theme question invented and chosen by the Humanities 7 class at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, an all-girls school in Greenfield, Massachusetts, for one of their units.

Some of them have seen articles with headlines like Girls Are Taking Over - Nerdiness and the New Gender Gap, (by Sophie Theis, published on July 22, 2006 in the "San Francisco Chronicle") saying that girls are doing better in school than boys, and wondered whether that was true. As with all good questions, the answer may not necessarily be so simple.

We invite you to join with us as we explore questions about smartness and gender, and search for answers. We are proposing the following steps to this project.:

  1. Come up with a definition of what "smart" means.
  2. Explore different ideas of intelligence.
  3. Collaborate to find, summarize and share all the reseach we can find in this area.
  4. If necessary, collaborate to create and design our our research in this area.
  5. Work on a final presentation of what we each have learned.
  6. Share those final presentations with each other and other interested people.
  7. Assess how well we have done at meeting the standards we set out to accomplish.
